Monday, June 20, 2005   By: Juan Paxety

Political Prisoner of the week: Leonel Grave de Peralta

Charge: Arrested during the government's crackdown of March 2003 (Group of 75)

Sentence: 20 years in prison

Prison: Kilo 5 1/2 . Pinar del Río

Organization: Director- Bartolome Maso Independent Library

Family: Mariluz Almenares

Address: Calle 7ma. Final. Loma Blanca. Palmarito de Cauto, Mella. Santiago de Cuba. Oriente

Review: Leonel Grave de Peralta has stood firmly on the side of his fellow political prisoners. Once he joined in a hunger strike to protest the physical abused of another prisoner of conscience at the hands of the prison staff. Since he has been sent to the province of Pinar del Rio to serve his sentence his family members who reside in the province of Oriente must endure many hardships when they visit him. They have to travel the width of the island and depend on the very unreliable Cuban transportation system.

On several occasions Grave de Peralta has been a signatory party to documents denouncing the precarious state of the Cuban communist society and its prisons.

Provided by netforcuba.org, which states:

-Objective

The Cuban people have been denied their civil, economic and political rights. Our objective is to each week feature one of the many Cubans, who are prisoners of conscience.

These political prisoners are being mistreated, tortured and humiliated in Castro's prisons. Cuban prisoners of conscience are the forefront of the struggle against Castro's tyranny and they deserve our recognition and support. They represent the paradigm in which Cuba's freedom and democratic values should be anchored in the future.
