Special Team To Search For MIA Speicher
Monday, March 24, 2003   By: Juan Paxety

A special defense and intelligence team formed

Defense and intelligence agencies have formed a special team to go into Iraq and search for MIA Capt. Scott Speicher, according to the Washington Times' Bill Gertz. Speicher, an FA-18 Hornet pilot, was shot down over Iraq on the first night of the Gulf War, January 17, 1991.

Gertz reports:

Creating the special unit comes as U.S. intelligence agencies reported last week that an American pilot believed to be Capt. Speicher was spotted alive in Baghdad earlier this month.
A classified intelligence report circulated to officials March 14 stated that Capt. Speicher was seen as he was being moved in Baghdad, although officials said the sighting could not be confirmed.

The joint team will also search for weapons of mass destruction, terrorists and Baath party leaders.

A Paxety Pages Update - March 28 - Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL) visited Scott Speicher's family today to discuss the latest Pentagon report on his status. Nelson said in a news conference later that he is not satisfied with the report because it is outdated. The report was prepared March 2, but Nelson only received it on March 27. The Florida Times Union reports:

The five-page unclassified version of the report is a virtually word-for-word repetition of an unclassified report the Central Intelligence Agency produced in March 2001. Two sentences about remains falsely identified as Speicher's, as well as a sentence fragment about his flight suit, were inserted. Otherwise, there were no meaningful changes.

Nelson says there are reports that Capt. Speicher was seen in Iraq within the past month.

Another update - April 24 is here.
