Now it's Mexico throwing out Cubans
Wednesday, March 08, 2006 By: Juan Paxety
Mexico sending Cubans back
Now it's Mexico. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports that Mexico plans to send a dozen Cubans back to fidel's island workers' paradise. The Cubans didn't care for the idea.
The Mexican government said Tuesday it was stepping up security at detention centers for illegal Cuban migrants after a group of detainees fought police officers and held a guard against his will - the seventh uprising or mass escape by Cubans in a year.
Officials also will deny political asylum to those involved in the latest conflict.
"After these acts, changes will certainly have to be reviewed to increase the level of security" at immigration holding centers like the one in Mexico City where a dozen Cubans rioted and briefly took over the facilities Monday, presidential spokesman Ruben Aguilar said.
These "illegal Cuban migrants" (what happened to the word "refugees") are forced to wait for months inside what are described as decrepit Mexican detention centers. When Mexico tries to send them back, the Cuban government refuses to recognize them as Cubans, forcing the Mexican government to punish the Cubans for leaving the island.
The article says about 500 Cubans are detained in Mexico every year - out of a total of 250,000 illegals Mexico captures annually.
