Cuba Receives UN Human Rights Appointment
Thursday, January 27, 2005 By: Juan Paxety
Cuba joins a "human rights" panel
How can anyone now consider the UN a legitimate organization? It has put Cuba on an action panel dealing with - get this - human rights. The Miami Herald reports 11-other Latin American countries put Cuba on the panel.
''It's very unfortunate that the Latin America contingency could not come up with a slate which doesn't include one of the principal human rights abusers in the world and the worst human rights abuser in the hemisphere,'' said a U.S. State Department official who spoke on condition of anonymity
Two of the three other appointments to the panel are as bad - Zimbabwe representing Africa, and China representing Asia. Hungary represents Europe.
In the insanity that marks too much of the UN's acts, Cuba was appointed even though the UN itself has condemned the country's human rights record for five consecutive years. The UN - a dictators' club.
Update - Joe has a lot to say, too.
